Two local volleyball squads participated in a round-robin scrimmage held at Santa Fe High School on Monday in preparation for the upcoming season. Teams from Santa Fe and Deer Creek High School competed against each other, before moving on to practice sets against clubs from both Jenks and Union. The scrimmage saw varsity, junior farsity and freshman teams from each of the schools square off one last time before the season begins later in the week. While scoring was kept throughout the scrimmage, coaches put extra emphasis on gaining valuable in-game experience and worried less about being ahead at the end of the sets. One of those coaches, Deer Creek Head Coach Lisa Polcovich, was proud of her teams’ performance on Monday. “I got to see a lot of great things and test some lineups,” Polcovich said, “We really got to see some versatility.” Polcovich is at the helm of a team that is returning the majority of its members. Last season, the Lady Antlers only had one senior, making this year’s team an almost carbon-copy from last fall. Despite the team having experience on their side, Polcovich still highlighted potential areas of improvement before they begin their regular season. “We need to work on our communication,” Polcovich said. “Our serve and receive, and our defense could show some improvement, too.” Deer Creek will be forced to adapt quickly, as they plan to attend the Norman Varsity Tournament this weekend. The tournament, which includes the Lady Antlers’s first regular-season matches, has multiple high-quality teams competing. “It’s a pretty decent tournament,” Polcovich said. “Ponca City and Mount St. Mary’s will be there.” Mount St. Mary’s is the defending class 5A State Champion. While Deer Creek will be heading south this weekend, Santa Fe will be opening its season in a familiar place. The Lady Wolves will open their season slate against Westmoore on Thursday, with the freshman, junior varsity and varsity teams all scheduled to compete in Sante Fe’s Competition Gym starting at 4 p.m. The Lady Wolves were originally scheduled to open their season against Mount St. Mary’s, as well, but Santa Fe’s Aug. 8 meeting with the Lady Rockets was moved to Oct. 2 after a schedule revision.
