The two-headed monster that is Edmond Santa Fe’s pitching rotation is starting to take shape, especially after they spearheaded a campaign on the road against Midwest City on Tuesday ending in an 8-1 victory. Earlier in the season, Head Coach Rhonda Lawson spoke of finding the right pitching rotation, and, at least on Tuesday, Lawson had found the two needed to get a dominant win. Madi Coats started the game and went 5 and 1/3 innings. Coats only allowed 1 run on 2 hits during her retirement of 16 Midwest City batters. “Madi did a good job on the mound,” Lawson said. “She was able to strike out 6, but walked too many batters in the fifth. We’re working that.” Coats’ walks meant that Jordan Bowman would come in for relief with 8 outs remaining in the game. Bowman struck out two and didn’t let a Midwest City runner cross home, earning herself a save and getting Coats the win. Santa Fe paired their good pitching with offensive production in the win. The Lady Wolves paired 8 runs with 10 hits on the evening when they finished the contest strong by scoring in the 4, 5, 6 and 7 innings. In the seventh inning, where Santa Fe scored half of their total runs, Natalie Jones led off and reached on a walk. Sydney Everhart bunted to slide Jones over and reached safely after an error on the Midwest City infield. After Megan Mentzer was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Chloe White knocked a single that scored Jones for White’s second RBI of the game. Next up, Maddie Langley hit a sacrifice fly to score Everhart. Loren Wright then hit a double that scored two more. Mentzer and White both recorded doubles in earlier innings of Tuesday’s win, and Jones hit a triple in the top of the fifth. Lawson was proud of her girls’ performance on Tuesday and used it as evidence that they could be a good team if they could get a few more things ironed out before the end of the season. “We have been so close on a few games,” Lawson said, “we just need to get used to playing together and we will be okay.”
