BROKEN ARROW — Noah Cortes conquered the Edmond Santa Fe defense in the first half, and three Broken Arrow interceptions kept the Wolves from getting any second-half revenge. Cortes rushed for 131 yards and a touchdown on just 12 carries in the first two quarters as No. 6 Broken Arrow defeated No. 5 Edmond Santa Fe 52-21 Friday at Broken Arrow’s Memorial Stadium in District 6AI-1 play. “Noah’s heart is bigger than his uniform,” Broken Arrow coach David Alexander said of Cortes, who only carried twice in the second half with the game not in doubt. “He’s had a great season. He’s a warrior.” Jeffrey Wilton got the Tigers on the board first with a 33-yard interception return for a touchdown early in the first quarter. The Tigers expanded the lead to 14-0 midway through the quarter on a 5-yard touchdown pass from Lafayette Wright to Izaiah Jackson. “Great job by Myles Slusher getting his hands on the ball, and a great job by Jeff getting underneath it and getting to the near sideline, like we teach them, and them going and scoring,” Alexander said of Wilton’s opening interception return for a touchdown. “That play got us going.” Edmond Santa Fe (4-3, 2-1) responded with a thunderous 31-yard run when Mbari Snoddy bowled over a Tigers defender on the way to the end zone, closing the score to 14-7 with 5:38 left in the first quarter. Cortes countered with a 20-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter to boost the lead back to 21-7, but a Broken Arrow fumble awoke the Wolves, and they responded with a 43-yard strike from Kanan Hansen to Nick Sharp on the next play to cut the lead to 21-14. Broken Arrow (3-4, 3-1) scored on an 8-yard pass from Wright to Cade Nagy with 3:48 left in the second quarter, and took a 28-14 lead into halftime. Two interceptions early in the third quarter by Gary Mossup set up 10 points to boost the lead to 38-14 midway through the quarter and the Tigers never looked back. Alexander was especially pleased with his team’s three interceptions and a fumble recovery, citing the turnovers as a key to the victory. “If you can get the offense into third-and-long, you can take a chance, put some pressure on the passer, and create some turnovers,” Alexander said. “We took advantage of those tonight.” Hansen, the Santa Fe quarterback, passed for 269 yards and completed 17-of-34 passes, including a 67-yard touchdown pass to Sharp. But the three interceptions were costly. “Any time you can get four turnovers, you’re going to win a lot of games,” Alexander said.
