Santa Fe beats Bruins; headed to state semi-finals

TULSA — The fourth-ranked Santa Fe Wolves outlasted the second-ranked Bartlesville Bruins 48-42 in the Class 6A girls basketball state quarterfinals Thursday night at Memorial Veterans Arena. Santa Fe (21-6) will face third-ranked Owasso Friday at 10:30 a.m. at the Oral Roberts University Mabee Center. The Rams (24-3) squeaked past seventh-ranked Memorial 37-34 earlier Thursday. Bartlesville finished 26-2. The Wolves had a trio of double figure scorers. Ravon Nero led the way with 17 points, while Makayla Foy and Keira Neal had 13 and 10, respectively. Jena Williams finished with a game high 23 points to pace the Bruins. Santa Fe was ahead double digits most of the way, but Bartlesville made things interesting with a furious rally in the fourth quarter. The Wolves seemed to have things in control as they were up 35-25 after three periods. They then scored the first six points of the fourth. The Bruins, however, scratched and clawed, and eventually got as close as 43-42 after Williams converted a bucket with just under a minute remaining. Nero answered at the free throw line. First, she made both ends of a 1-and-1 with 39 seconds left. She then hit 1-of-2 with 26 seconds to play. Santa Fe then withstood a couple of good looks from Bartlesville and eventually Neal capped the scoring on a breakaway basket with 5.6 seconds remaining. Santa Fe was ahead 13-9 after the first quarter. Kryslyn Jones provided a boost as she scored all six of her on 3-of-3 field goal shooting in the frame. The Wolves then scored the first eight points of the second period and eventually held a 26-12 advantage at the half. Santa Fe appeared to have things under control after a good third quarter. The Bruins, had other ideas in the fourth, but the Wolves were able to hang on.
