Edmond Santa Fe’s Matt Brigida scored twice Thursday evening in Moore to help the Wolves to a 4-2 win against the Southmoore Sabercats. Brigida scored the first two Santa Fe goals Thursday night. The first came on the assist from Santa Fe defender Damien Sheung; The second came unassisted. Edmond Santa Fe head coach Joe Peeler said after the win that he was excited to see the senior forward Brigida get rewarded for his hard play. “(Matt) had a lot of goals for us last night, but he hadn’t had a whole lot this year so far,” Peeler said, mentioning that most of Brigida’s chances have ended in assists for his teammates rather than goals. “He’s finally getting rewarded for opening things up.” While Brigida has been facilitating for the Wolves in a season-long view, his two goals early last night opened up the SaberCats, and Santa Fe scored twice more against the vulnerable Southmoore backline. “It really was the whole team,” Peeler said. “Everything we did was based around not being individualized. There was a lot of movement, and that’s a positive for us. A couple years ago, we were all individualized.” Brigida assisted the third Wolves goal — scored by midfielder Emilio Rivas. The final score was made on an unassisted shot from Santa Fe sophomore Jesus Romero. Goalkeeping sophomore Gavin Greenwood recorded three saves in the win. Peeler said that his team’s desire to play together stems from the sheer amount of leadership on the roster. “This group has a lot of leadership, and it’s not just the mouth,” Peeler said. “It’s the working together, working hard, and it’s good for us.” The leadership by example has Peeler excited, especially since his team has already climbed back from some devastating situations early this season. Peeler outlined some self-described bad situations — like an 0-3 deficit to Edmond Memorial and a 1-nil disadvantage after a fluke of a goal went in early in Tuesday’s match against Stillwater. But, in both of those stories, Edmond Santa Fe came roaring back to tie the game in the second half. “Coming into the Southmoore game I told my kids, ‘I think we’re the best 2-4 team in the state”, Coach Peeler explained. Despite ultimately losing both contests — against Memorial in the final minutes of regulation time, and then falling Tuesday to Stilly in penalty kicks — Peeler was excited about his teams desire to fight back, rather than just giving into the pressure. “Some teams fall apart through that, some teams stay together,” Peeler mentioned. “We still have a long way to go, but I’ve visited with a lot of coaches across the state and we all think Class 6A is wide-open.” Peeler’s final quote echoed the resolve that his now 3-4 Santa Fe Wolves have played with early this season. Next for Santa Fe is a varsity clash with Capitol Hill at home on March 26. Varsity boys will kick off at 8 p.m.
